I'm a survivor of long term (at least the first 12 years of my life - possibly more that I can't recall) childhood abuse, sexual, emotional and physical. I'm well into my fourth decade on this earth and have spent at least 20 years in therapy. Last year, I discovered a type of therapy that was new to me - called, EMDR, standing for, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. I cannot describe the difference it has made in me. The years of traditional therapy was helpful in that it taught me valuable coping skills and helped me understand my thoughts and feelings and actions. The EMDR therapy made the abuse, while still terrible, a terrible memory - instead of something I was constantly battling. I so highly recommend it to anyone who's been through anything similar.
